350 Garden Challenge

Save The Date - May 14-15, 2011 - across the country

Video

Last May Transition Initiatives and other community groups across Sonoma County, California, mobilized to plant 350 gardens in one weekend. At the end of the day over600 projects were completed!  This year Transition US is taking this challenge truly national.  In coming months we will be working closely with all of you to make it easy to bring this challenge to your community.  Stay tuned!  Email us at info@transitionus.org if you would like to get involved early.

Transition Initiative Projects

This month we welcome two new initiatives - browse the initiatives map and learn more about becoming an Official Transition Initiative.

BrazilBrazil Unleashing - The Transition model is being adapted all over the world - big cities like Los Angeles to small islands like Whidbey, Washington - and most recently, in the high poverty community of 247,000 people in São Paulo, Brazil, where a group gathered in December for the official unleashing of ‘Transixion’ Brasilândia (read more)

Transition Keene Video10/10/10 Documentary
- Transition Keene in New Hampshire recently released their documentary on the community’s efforts on 10/10/10 as part of the global work party on climate protection that involved over 7,000 communities in 188 countries. (read more)

Books & Films
(that Transition folk are reading and screening)

Vanishing of the BeesVanishing of the Bees
Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. The film explores the struggles they face as the two friends plead their case on Capital Hill and travel across the Pacific Ocean in the quest to protect their honeybees. (Being screened by Transition Sebastopol)

Meat CoverMeat: A Benign Extravagance
Meat is a groundbreaking exploration of the difficult environmental, ethical, and social issues surrounding the human consumption of animals, and the future of livestock in sustainable agriculture. Garnering huge praise in the UK, this book answers the question: should we be farming animals, or not? The answer is not simple, but Simon Fairlie presents in-depth research in favor of small-scale, holistic, and integrated farming systems as the answer to the pro-meat or no-meat debate. (The book was included in Rob Hopkins Holiday booklist and is available in North America in Feb 2011)

Dirt!Dirt! The Movie
An insightful and timely film that tells the story of the glorious and unappreciated material beneath our feet. Inspired by William Bryant Logan's acclaimed book "Dirt! The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth", Dirt! The Movie takes a humorous and substantial look into the history and current state of the living organic matter that we come from and will later return to.
