Welcoming Dr. Barbara Sattler to the Transition US Board

Dr. Barbara Sattler is a Professor in Public Health at the University of San Francisco and a nursing leader in the area of environmental health, including issues related to climate change.   She has been an advisor to the EPA’s Office of Child Health Protection and the National Library of Medicine for informational needs of health professionals on environmental health.

Dr. Sattler helped to create the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE), an international organization that is helping to integrate environmental health into nursing education, practice, research, and policy/advocacy.

We’re thrilled to welcome Barbara to the Transition US Board, and believe her background in public health and academics will be a powerful contribution to the strength and experience of our board.

Under Barbara’s leadership, ANHE has played an important role in the fight against fracking by alerting policymakers and the public to the detrimental health impacts of the chemicals used in fracking on the communities nearby. Earlier this month, Dr. Sattler addressed a crowd of more than 5,000 people at the March for Real Climate Leadership in Oakland, California.

Last summer, Barbara convened a retreat for diverse environmental and community resilience activists from across the U.S., encouraging leaders from indigenous, Transition, frontline fracking communities, and government to employ creative and strategic thinking in developing holistic approaches to addressing climate change and other environmental crises.

She is committed to building a multi-class, multi-racial movement for community resilience and climate action, and joined members of Transition US staff and local initiatives at a workshop by the Catalyst Project on “Dismantling Racism in Our Communities: Building Collaboration for Resilience” last fall.

Dr. Sattler resides in Forestville, California. In her personal life, she and her husband own an organic farm/vineyard/winery where they host the weekly community Farmers’ Market.

Dr. Sattler joins current board members:

·         Trathen Heckman (Board President), Executive Director of Daily Acts;

·         Asher Miller, Executive Director of Post Carbon Institute;

·         Mark Juedeman, geophysicist, Transition Trainer, and founder of Transition Houston;
